Moro Islamic seperatist group: ‘RP erred in inviting UN rights probe’

20 03 2007

Creating a diplomatic situation that may in fact lead to defacto recognition by the UN of a rebel group is what is seen as the result of the ongoing UN human rights commission probe of extrajudicial killings and death squads in the Philippines.

The MILF in a statement says that it is ironic that the CPP-NDF-NPA might get observer status. This while while the armed wing of the NDF the NPA is on the list of the EU, US, and UN as a terrorist organization.

[“… The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said bringing up the issue of alleged mass killings undertaken by the New People’s Army (NPA) to the United Nations will have a positive effect on the group on its effort to secure international recognition and legitimacy. Muhammad Ameen, head of the Secretariat of the MILF Central Committee, is reacting to report that the government is asking the United Nations to investigate the mass killings allegedly staged by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) following reports of mass graves discovered in different parts of the country.

“A state actor complaining against a non-state actor in the United Nations?” he asked.

“This is something very unusual if not ridiculous, and should have been studied carefully before the government acts in haste.”
He said the NPA is expected to very happy with this turn of event and they are getting the necessary exposure and publicity they needed in the face of the “terror tag” put on it by the United States and the European Union.  …”]

Or so reports the Asian Journal:

[“…MILF: ‘UN probe of NPA will give communists legitimacy’

MANILA, Philippines — Government plans to ask the United Nations (UN) to investigate alleged mass murders by the New People’s Army (NPA) can only lend “international recognition and legitimacy” to the communist rebels, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said Tuesday. An article posted on the MILF website quoted Muhammad Ameen, head of the MILF central committee’s secretariat, as saying: “A state actor complaining against a non-state actor in the United Nations?” “This is something very unusual if not ridiculous, and should have been studied carefully before the government acts in haste,” Ameen said….”]

Quoting the post on the MILF website – by Muhammad Ameen, who chairs the secretariat of the MILF, the journal reports that there is a chance the NPA  might get more out of the investigations results than the Philippine government.

The MILF and NPA have obvious ideological differences but oftentimes cooperate in the field level but follow very different models of both insurgency and politics. essentially the MILF seeks a Islamic state governed by democratic rules – and a free market- while the NPA follows the more traditional leftist economic model – at last in statements issued.

The MILF is recognized by several groups in the Middle East led by the OIC and is currently engaged in US backed, Malaysian brokered peace talks with the Philippine Government it is the largest armed ‘rebel’ group in the Philippines.
